WBSC boosts Baseball5 development in Africa

The WBSC participated for the second consecutive year in the Friendship Games. The event is organised by Peace and Sport in in the Great Lakes region at the border between Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

BUJUMBURA, Burundi — 20 August, 2018. The WBSC participated for the second consecutive year in the Friendship Games. The event is organised by Peace and Sport in the Great Lakes region at the border between Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Friendship Games is a 3-day event where delegates and experts from 8 participating international federations give seminars and organise competitions based on the “Sport Simple” concept, it consist in adapting the discipline and the equipment, thus to make the sport accessible with material recycled or available locally.

Baseball5, the recently launched 5 on 5 street game, in fact, saw its firsts stage of development last year at the Friendship Games where it was initially introduced as StreetBaseball.

WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari commented “We are honoured to be a part of this magnificent programme run by our friends at Peace and Sport for the second time. The Friendship Games is a much-needed source of inspiration for the children of the Great Lakes region and we are delighted to have been given the opportunity bringing Baseball5 here.”

Last weekend over 50 coaches and 140 children form the 3 countries took part in theoretical and practical Baseball5 sessions. A tournament concluded the event.

Peace and Sport is an NGO that uses the sport to promote peace and cooperation in post conflict areas. It runs 5 centres distributed between Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo that provide a safe environment play sports for children and teenagers.
