Women’s BWC: Australia clinches 4th Place in 1st Round

Australia is joining Canada, USA and Japan in the semi-finals of the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup. The team from Down Under shut out Chinese Taipei 11-0 on Friday morning to clinch fourth place in the first round of the tournament. The Asian squad has to settle for the consolation round. The opponent for Australia will be determined later on Friday.

The Aussies decided the game in the second inning, putting six runs on the board for commanding lead. Five runs in the third set the lights towards an early ending after five. Four players scored twice. Bronwyn Gell went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. He also stole two bases, bringing her tournament total to eight.

Chinese Taipei managed just four hits in the contest, as Australian hurlers Brittany Hepburn, Lauren McGrath and Maddison Lenard dominated at the mound. Hepburn picked up the win, allowing one hit and two walks in three scoreless innings. Wen Ching Hsieh was charged with the loss, surrendering six hits and six runs (4 ER) in two innings.
