Women’s BWC: Japan shuts out Australia in crucial Thursday Matchup

Japan has won its fifth game at the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton, Canada on Thursday. The defending title holder defeated Australia 10-0 in six innings to improve to 5-1 in the tournament. They scored eight runs in the first two frames, providing a comfortable cushion early. Australia dropped to 3-3, battling for the fourth spot in the semi-finals.

The reigning world champion decided things quickly. They were led by Iori Miura, Ayako Rokkaku and Yuki Kawabata, who drove in two runs apiece. Four players scored twice. Bronwyn Gell, Kim McMillan and Samantha Hamilton had the three hits for Australia.

The team from Down Under couldn’t do much against the pitching of hurlers Risa Nakashima and Yukari Isozaki. Nakashima conceded just three hits and two walks in four scoreless innings. Isozaki retired all six batters she faced to close it out. Stephanie Gaynor took the loss for Australia, allowing three hits, seven runs (4 ER) and three base on balls in 1 1/3 frames.
