Women’s BWC: Japan starts with Shutout over Netherlands

After having the opening day off at the V Women’s Baseball World Cup defending champion Japan started the tournament at Telus Field in Edmonton, Canada with a 21-0 blowout over the Netherlands. Japan scored nine runs apiece in the first and the fifth to end the contest early after five frames. It was the second loss for the Dutch team in the tournament.

Japan used 13 players on offense, 11 of them got hits, all 13 scored at least once in the game. Tomomi Nishi drove in four, Natsumi Nakano three. Yui Oyama and Akiko Shimura crossed the plate thrice. Galieth Haaker had two of the five hits for the Netherlands.

Pro player Mika Konishi and Moemi Yoshii shared the workload on the mound for Team Nippon, allowing a combined five hits and one walk, while striking out four. Amber Dammers started for the Dutch, getting charged with ten hits, ten runs (9 ER) and two base on balls in three innings. After her Maria van Veen, Johanna Alfons-Wortelboer, Lisette Bennink and Loes Asmus also got into the game for the European team.
