Women’s BWC: Japan tops Chinese Taipei

After a couple of cancelations and rain delays, finally a game was completed on day five of the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton, Canada. Japan topped Chinese Taipei 11-1 in five innings in late afternoon. Five runs in the first and five in the fourth decided things quickly in favor of the defending champion. It was their third win in the fourth game for Japan, while Chinese Taipei dropped to 3-2.

Japan topped Chinese Taipei 11-1 in five innings in late afternoon. Five runs in the first and five in the fourth decided things quickly in favor of the defending champion. It was their third win in the fourth game for Japan, while Chinese Taipei dropped to 3-2.

Japan didn’t show any rust after the long waiting time and put five runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth with the help of three errors by the opposing defense. Another rain shower interrupted play shortly in the second, stopping also the Nippon offense. Only until the fourth, when they extended the lead to 10-1. A run in the fifth ended the game on ten-run mercy rule.

Pro center fielder Iori Miura scored three of the eleven Japanese runs. Akiko Shimura and Yukiko Kon had two RBI apiece. Yin Sha Lo crossed the plate for the lone run for Chinese Taipei in the top of the third. Japan’s shortstop Ayaka Deguchi had botched a throw with two outs. But it end it only denied a shutout.

Right-hander Mika Konishi cruised through five uneventful innings, relying solely on their defense. He allowed just one unearned run on three hits and a walk for a complete game victory. She struck out none batter and face five batters over the minimum. Nai Chia Chen was charged with four hits, five runs (4 ER) and two base on balls in one inning on the mound, taking the loss.
