Women’s BWC: Maple Leafs stay on Course against Venezuela

Canada welcomed Venezuela at the V Women’s Baseball World Cup with an impressive ten-run rule shortened 14-2 victory. They scored four runs in the first and blew the score wide open in the fourth and the fifth to end it early. It is the second win for the host at Telus Field in Edmonton, remaining on course for a medal. Venezuela arrived only a few hours before game time and only was able to be a threat in the first.

Canada scored in four of the five innings played, highlighted by a six-run fifth which put the game into the books. Ashley Stephenson, Stephanie Savoie and Katherine Psota scored three runs apiece. Savoie , Bradi Wall and Rebecca Hartley each drove in three. Ofelia Arrieche and Ingrid Escobar scored the two runs for Venezuela.

Autumn Mills received the win, allowing just two runs (1 ER) on five hits and a walk in four innings. She struck out one. Amanda Asay closed it out. Venezuela had to use four pitchers to get through the game. Loudelis Moreno had problems to find her rhythm and lasted just two outs, taking the loss.
