MONTERREY, Mexico — Jung Sung Gon pitched a complete game and struck out four batters to lead No. 3 Korea to a 5-3 win over No. 15 Panama, as the world No. 3 captured the bronze medal at the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2016.
The win for Korea avenged a 5-4 loss to Panama in the Opening Round, as “Corea de Sur” (South Korea) trended on Twitter in Panama Sunday afternoon.
Jung held Panama to three runs on four hits and two walks, while his offense managed five runs on six hits to come away with the win.

The win equals Korea’s result from the U-21 Baseball World Cup 2014 and is their first medal won at a WBSC world championship-level event in 2016. Korea won the international baseball flagship — PREMIER12® — that was launched in 2015. Korea also finished in 3rd Place at the U-18 Baseball World Cup 2015.
Panama starter Luis Ramos was knocked out of the game in the 2nd inning, as Korea jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on Sim Woo Jun Sim’s 2-RBI double and Kim Tae Jin’ triple that scored Sim.
Panama’s Rodrigo Alexis Orozco hit a solo home run in the 6th inning, which brought his nation within two run of Korea.
Allen Cordoba’s sacrifice fly in the 8th inning cut Korea’s lead to 4-3 heading into the 9th inning. Korea added an insurance run in the top of the 9th inning before Jung pitched a perfect 9th inning to put his nation on the medal podium.
