Aleshia Ocasio throws complete game as Puerto Rico grab important win over Cuba

Janelle Martinez was responsible for all Puerto Rico runs, collecting two RBIs and scoring one run.

Aleshia Ocasio struck out eight in seven innings of work and helped world No. 4 Puerto Rico clinch an important 3-1 win against No. 28 Cuba, on Day 3 of the Women’s Softball World Cup Group B. It was Puerto Rico’s second win of the tournament.

The Boricuas scored their three runs in the second inning. With runners on third and second, Janelle Martinez connected a single to right field to knock in the first two runs of the game. A throwing error on Tatiana Roman’s grounder left runners in the corners, and Martinez herself used her speed to score the third run of the game on a double steal play.

For Cuba, lefty Yilian Tornes was pulled after 2+ innings, after giving up four hits and three runs. She was replaced in the circle by Yamerki Guevara, who tossed four no-hit innings, with six strikeouts.

Ocasio kept Cuba off the scoreboard for the first four innings, but in the fifth a long double to center field by Yanisleidys Casanova (the top hitter of the tournament with a .667 batting average) brought in Lisaidy Samon from first.

It was the only run Ocasio surrendered. The two-way player allowed five hits in the game, with no walks. It’s her first win of the competition.
