Great Britain stun Australia behind a Georgina Corrick gem; Kendyl Scott homers

Corrick pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out seven hitters.

Behind a complete game shutout from Georgina Corrick, Great Britain opened Group A of the Women’s Softball World Cup with an historic 2-0 victory over Australia. Corrick pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out seven hitters.

It was a pitching duel at All Weather Field in Balbriggan. Ellen Roberts started for Australia and pitched five strong innings. Her only mistake was in the bottom of the fourth, when British leadoff-hitter Kendyl Scott connected an inside the plate drop and sent it over the left field fence, to give her team a 1-0 lead.

Lefty Kaia Parnaby came in relief in the sixth and received a run on a double steal play that gave Corrick an insurance run for the last two innings.

Home run hero Scott said the key was going into the game confident. "Honestly, we were coming out to win. We're dogs out here, that's kind of what our mantra is. We're coming to win, we're going to be scrappy. Our mentality was 'win'.

On people saying GB beating Australia was an 'upset': We're not the underdogs. I don't know why people keep saying we're the underdogs. We're one of the best countries in the world, it's not an upset to me."

On her home run: "I saw it big and didn't miss it."

Preparation for tomorrow's game against Chinese Taipei: Get some rest, get food, do some mental preparation and be at it tomorrow."
