Puerto Rico Double-A League down to best eight teams

The Puerto Rican Double-A League will open the second part of its postseason on Friday, 21 July. The tournament is an eight-team round robin including the winners of the eight conferences named Carnaval de Campeones (Champions Carnival).

The eight conference winners are the defending Double-A champions Toritos de Cayey (Central); the 2022 runner-up Peces Voladores de Salinas (South); Piratas de Cabo Rojo (Southwest); Grises de Humacao (Southeast); Guardianes de Dorado (Metro); Arenosos de Camuy (North); Libertadores de Hormigueros (Northwest) and Halcones de Gurabo (East).

The top four-finishers of the Carnaval de Campeones will advance to the leagues semifinals.

The league also revealed the season's individual awards.

Kevin Luciano, the first baseman of the defending champions Toritos de Cayey (.431 batting average, .754 slugging average, 1.324 OPS) was named the regular season's Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Carlos Ferrer (Gigantes de Carolina) earned Manager of the Year honours.

Miguel Mejia (Leones de Patillas) was named the best pitcher, while Ivan Houellemont (Guerrilleros de Rio Grande) earned Rookie of the Year honours.

The Youth Double-A League (15-18 age bracket) will open on 11 August in Moisés García Stadium, the home of the defending champions Mets. The 68 teams will compete in a 20-game regular season.

The Double-A League is the top baseball competition organized by the National Baseball Federation in Puerto Rico.
