Seunghwan Song walk-off grand slam lifts Korea over Cuba

The game got into the seventh with no score and within two strikes of an extra-inning finish. Song got to Andy Vargas' fourth pitch and turned it into the game-winner.

Cuba and Korea combined couldn't make double digits in hits, and Korea's only chances to score had come, thanks to their running game. Left fielder Seunghwon Song was 0-for-3 when he stepped into the box with the bases loaded and two outs. Song changed the outcome of the game with a swing of the bat. He got to the fourth pitch by reliever Andy Vargas and sent a no-doubter beyond the left field wall for Korea's 4-0 win.

Before the bottom of the seventh, Cuba had the cleanest of scoring chances.

In the top of the second, third baseman Yuri Fernandez doubled off starter Unhyun Noh with one out. He then reached third on a walk and a hit batter. Fernandez tried to score from third on a fly out to right field, but Sejin Cho's arm beat him at home.

In the top of the sixth, right fielder Christian Hidalgo hit a leadoff double. Reliever Kyuyeon Kim, the fourth Korean pitcher, retired the side in order. He would earn the win.

The only Korean chances came thanks to the small ball and the running game. Song's grand slam was just their fourth hit for the night.

The win moves Korea to a 2-0 win-loss record on top of Group B and will play Australia on Monday in Doiliu while Cuba is still to record a win after two games and will play the Netherlands, also in Doiliu on Monday.
