2016 Women’s Softball World Championship Day 2 Game Summary

Day two of the Women’s World Championship saw two-defending champion Japan take the field for the first time, Mexico’s Cheyanne Terango pitched a three inning perfect game, while 2014 bronze medalist Australia won to stay in medal contention.

It has been 12 years since Greece and China last faced each other during the 2004 Athens Olympics. History repeated itself as China defeated Greece, this time 5-1.

In the bottom of the second, Jing Zhao hit a single and advanced to second off a shot back to the pitcher by Jing Jing Yan. The following batter Minghan Yuan then singles to drive Jing Zhao home.

Following a quiet second inning, Greece scored their sole run of the game after Tselsi Lisikatos hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Demi Ann Patonis to cross the plate.

China scored the bulk of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. With a 3-0 count, Yao Lu singled to get on base. After she stole second and Jing Jing Yan walked, Minghan Yuan singled plating Yao Lu. Zhen Qu followed with a home run clearing the bases and bringing the score to 5-1.

Greece tried to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh. With one out, Evangelia Stefatou walked, putting Patonis in scoring position. But China was able to shut them down forcing two ground outs to end the game.

Two of the top teams from Europe faced each other on Day 2. The U-22 champions, Netherlands, able to hold off Czech Republic 2-0 for their second win of the championship.

Britt Vonk led the game off for the Dutch with a walk and two batter later, she stole second to get in scoring position. Dinet Oosting then singled, driving her home and the score to 1-0.

Czech lead-off batter, Tereza Vickova, also walked in her first at-bat, but was unable to capitalize after three straight put-outs by the Netherlands.

It wasn’t until the top of the seventh that the Netherlands added their second and final run of the game. Damishah Charles entered the game as a pinch runner for Oosting and immediately stole second. Five pitches later, Maxime Van Dalen hit a single driving Charles home and bringing the score to 2-0.

In the bottom of the inning, Czech Republic attempted to take the game back. Tereza Pochobradska lead the inning off and advanced to first after Ginger de Weert’s pitch got away from her and struck Pochobradska. But three straight put-outs ended the game giving the Netherlands the 2-0 win.

The United States was looking for their second win in as many days; while Austria was still searching for their first world championship win. It only took an hour and five minutes for the USA to take down the European team 15-0 in three innings.

In the first inning, the USA piled on nine runs, mainly through home runs. Delaney Spaulding hit a grand slam and six batters later, Kelsey Stewart followed up with a two-run shot of her own.

The second inning brought more of the same as Michelle Moultrie hit a two-run home run and Amanda Chidester hit a solo shot, bringing the score to 12-0.

The pain finally ended for Austria in the third. Moultrie hit a double to score Valerie Arioto. Chidester then brings Moultrie home after hitting her second home run of the game.

New Zealand defeated Peru, 7-0 in a shortened five inning game to earn their second win.

The first two innings of the game went by quickly as both teams were able to get just one batter on base.

However, in the third, New Zealand got the action going. Danica Ferriso singles and later scored on a fielder’s choice for the first run.

In the fourth inning, the White Sox finally turned the engines on, scoring five runs on five hits. Katrina Nukunuku hit a triple to drive in Kyla Bromhead and Mikayla Werahiko. The next batter, Melanie Gettins, was careful at the plate running up a full count before singling to score Nukunuku. Ellie Cooper later singled allowing Stefanie Smith and Danica Ferriso to cross home, bringing a comfortable 6-0 lead.

Hailey Breakwell hit a triple in the fifth and was able to cross the plate from a defensive error. After Peru could not get anything going, the game ended after five innings with a 7-0 New Zealand victory.

Cheyanne Terango put on a pitching clinic striking out every batter but one — though Terango caught the final fly-out — to pitch a perfect game as Mexico defeated Serbia 15-0 in three innings.

Victoria Vidales hit two home runs in the game, while Jessica Traxler lead all batters with 4 RBIs.

Ecuador scored their first world championship victory with a lopsided 14-0 three inning win over India.

In the first inning, Ecuador sprinted forward scoring five runs off four hits. Maria Teran, Heidi Ugalde, Maria Jose Falconi, and Maria Garcia each had RBI hits in the inning.

The next inning, Norma Mino and Teran each tripled, while untimely walks and errors caused the game to jump nine runs to a 14-0 score.

India was unable to get anything going causing the game to end after four innings.

Japan had to come from behind in the bottom of the seventh to win 2-1 over Venezuela in their first game of the 2016 Women’s World Championship.

Japan provided the first threat by loading the bases in the top of the first. But Haruna Sakamoto popped up to Maria Soto and Venezuela ended the inning unharmed.

Venezuela got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Milagros Lozada hit a solo home run for the 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Venezuela loaded the bases with two outs, but Jineth Pimentel struck out ending the danger for Japan.

In the bottom of the seventh, Japan staged a comeback when pinch-runner Yuka Ichiguchi advanced into scoring position on a Misato Kawano grounder back to the pitcher. Eri Yamada then singled, driving in Ichiguchi to tie the game. With only one out in the game, a grounder by Nozomi Nagasaki gave enough time for Yamada to score the go-ahead and the winning run to end the game.

Italy cruised to a 15-0 victory over Kenya in a quick one hour three inning game.

In the first inning, Italy pieced together seven hits to score nine runners — Elisa Grifagno and Elisa Cecchetti twice, and once by Erika Piancastelli, Sara Avanzi, Lara Buila, Alice Parisi, and Marta Gasparotto.

Defensive errors allowed Parisi and Buila to score in the second.

Italy did not let in, scoring four runs by Buila, Piancastelli, Avanzi, and Cecchetti to end the game early.

The 2014 bronze medal winner, Australia, faced a must win situation to stay in medal contention. They did not hesitate as they cruised to a 12-0 win over Switzerland.

In the first inning, Stacey Porter lead off with a solo home run, followed by a two-run shot by Brenda De Blaes. With two outs, Stacey McManus found room to hit a single driving in Taylah Tsitsikronis before the inning ended 4-0.

The Aussie Spirit bats exploded in the second as six runs crossed home plate. Clare Warwick hit a one-out single to score Georgia Blair. Chelsea Forkin hit to Switerland’s Fabienne Baumgartner, who could not complete the play allowing Rachel Lack to score and De Blaes to reach third. The next batter, Tsitsikronis, then hit a three-run homer to bring the score to 9-0. Janice Blackman doubled to score Stacey McManus before Switzerland could end the inning.

The final runs of the game came in the third inning when Carmelle Sorensen singled to plate Forkin and Erin Thras.

Justine Smethurst and Jocelyn Jeloudev split the pitching work-load in a four-inning no-hitter win.

After a close game last night, Great Britain was able to cruise to a 13-1 victory over Uganda tonight.

Kendyl Scott started the inning off for Great Britain with a single. Sarah Craig followed with a double to score Scott. Lauren Evans hits a single to bring Craig home. With one out, Uganda loaded the bases. Stephanie Pearce then hits in Evans and Amy Moore. A fly out to left field was deep enough to score Kirsten Mack before the inning ended 5-0.

Great Britain continue their onslaught in the second scoring eight runs off four hits to bring the score to 13-0.

In the top of the third, Rosemary Iopaowitt singled permitting Rukia Ajabo to score Uganda’s only run of the game.

Canada powered past Ireland 14-0 at the WBSC Women’s World Softball Championship. Nine Canadians registered hits including six that went for extra bases while Sara Plourde held the Irish to one hit in the four inning win.

Plourde allowed only one hit and struck out eight in the four-inning win, with Jenn Salling providing a homerun and a single, Erika Polidori collecting a triple, a double and drove in four runs and Victoria Hayward added a pair of doubles and a single. Megan Gurski and Carey-Leigh Thomas each contributed a pair of singles.

Scoreless through six and a half innings, Cuba scores one run with two outs to sneak a 1-0 win over Guatemala.

It took Guatemala four innings to obtain their first base runner. Paola Polanco hit a one-out single. But a ground-out and strikeout ended the inning quickly. Angela Chavarria hit the team’s remaining hit in the sixth but was later caught stealing to end the inning.

For Cuba, their first threat came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Yilian Velazquez led the inning off with a single. However, Guatemala’s defense was sharp preventing any damage to keep the game scoreless.

In the seventh inning, Cuba managed to cross the plate. With one out, Elizabet Cando singled to reach base. A fielder’s choice hit by Yumey Minoso allowed Cando to advance into scoring position. With two outs, Maylin Bauta poked a single through allowing Cando to speed around the bases scoring the game’s only run and securing Cuba’s 1-0 victory.

A close game between Chinese Taipei and Puerto Rico offered Pool E the closest game thus far, with Puerto Rico prevailing 2-0.

Puerto Rico offered the games only runs right off the bat, scoring two runs in the first inning. Quianna Diaz-Petterson led the game off with a walk. The next batter Elicia D’Orazio then put her in scoring position. Karla Claudio two-out double provided enough power for Diaz-Petterson to plate. Carsyn Gordon then singled allowing Claudio to score and Puerto Rico the 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, Puerto Rico threatened to add to their lead. Korina Rosario was standing on third with two outs but Diaz-Petterson hit into a double play to end the inning.

In the fourth, with the bases loaded, Chinese Taipei’s Ying-Hsin Lin struck out Diaz-Petterson to end the inning and prevent further damage.

Both teams had small opportunities to score in the remaining innings, but were unable to capitalize allowing Puerto Rico the 2-0 win.
