Schedule revealed for the VI Women’s Baseball World Cup in Japan

World No. 4 Canada and No. 9 Netherlands will play each other to open the VI Women’s Baseball World Cup.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The schedule of the three-day opening round of the VI Women’s Baseball World Cup in Miyazaki, Japan, has been revealed by Baseball World Cup officials in the Olympic Capital city.

The opening round will consist of a total of twelve Women’s Baseball World Cup contests.

World T-No. 3 Canada will take on No. 9 Netherlands at Ivy Stadium on September 1st to open up action of the Women’s Baseball World Cup. During their contest at the V Women’s Baseball World Cup in 2012, Canada walked away with a 19-2 win over the Netherlands.

Canada – the 2012 bronze medalist – and Netherlands are in Group B, along with 2012 silver medalist United States and Chinese Taipei.

In the other Group B opening day contest, No. 2 United States and No. 6 Chinese Taipei will collide at Ivy Stadium. The U.S. National Team bested Chinese Taipei 13-3 in their only contest against each other at the 2012 Women’s Baseball World Cup.

No. 5 Venezuela and No. 13 Hong Kong will kick things off for Group A at Sun Marine Stadium. It will be Hong Kong’s first Women’s Baseball World Cup contest since 2010. Venezuela finished fifth in 2012.

World No. 1 Japan and T-No. 3 Australia will finish off Day 1 action with their contest at Sun Marine Stadium. Japan defeated Australia in both head-to-head contests at the 2012 Women’s Baseball World Cup by scores of 10-0 and 5-1 — en route to repeating as Women’s Baseball World Cup champion.

Japan, the three-time defending Women’s Baseball World Cup champion, will be riding a seven-game win streak into Miyazaki.

A rest day (Day 4) will follow the opening round, which will also allow for any needed make-up games due to uncooperative weather conditions.

Second Round

Action will pick up again on Day 5, 5-Sept, after teams have been placed into either the medal contention bracket or the consolation bracket, based on first round results.

The top two opening round finishers from Groups A and B will qualify for the medal contention bracket, with the top two finishers from Group A battling it out against the top two finishers of Group B.

The bottom two finishers of Groups A and B will be relegated to the consolation bracket and play a similar format as the medal contention bracket.

All head-to-head results from the opening round will carry over into the second round.

The top two finishers after the two contests in the medal contention bracket will move on to the Baseball World Cup gold medal match, while the bottom two teams will compete for the bronze.

Under this modified double round-robin format, no National Teams will play each other twice until the finals on Sunday, September 7th.

Championship Sunday

The 2014 Women’s Baseball World Cup gold medal match and bronze medal match will take place at Sun Marine Stadium on the 7th of September.

The contests to determine 5th – 8th place will be set at Ivy Stadium.

A total of twenty-four Baseball World Cup games will be contested in Miyazaki, with each National Team competing in a total of six contests.
