Argentina’s first-ever women’s baseball league launched

BUENOS AIRES – Women’s baseball was officially launched in Argentina with the newly established Metropolitan Women’s Baseball League that is overseen by the Argentina Baseball Federation (FAB).

BUENOS AIRES – Baseball’s global footprint and demographics continue to expand as women’s baseball was officially launched in Argentina.

Opening games in the Metropolitan Women’s Baseball League were recently played in the Argentinian capital at Estadio Nacional de Ezeiza with Argentina Baseball Federation President Sergio Martín throwing out the ceremonial first pitch to launch the league.

Five clubs based in Buenos Aires will compete over a 24-game schedule in the Metropolitan Women’s Baseball League. The top four clubs will advance to the semi-final playoff before the top women’s baseball team is crowned.

“Congratulations to the Argentina Baseball Federation on the launch of the Metropolitan Women’s Baseball League,” said World Baseball Softball Confederation Executive Director Michael Schmidt. “This is another step forward in women’s baseball history and the evolution of our sport.”

Future plans to expand women’s baseball in the South American nation include establishing women’s baseball clubs across Argentina in order to launch a national championship and form a Women’s National Baseball Team to compete in international events such as the Women’s Baseball World Cup®.

Women’s baseball has seen a recent surge in popularity and media interest over the last few years to become one of the fastest growing forms of baseball, with fellow South Americans Venezuela having also recently launched the nation’s first women’s baseball league.

At the men’s level, Argentina is currently 21st in the WBSC Baseball World Rankings.
