Doo Doongyeon slugs Korea past Italy, Venezuela earns third win

Right fielder provided six RBIs, Korea’s record is now 4-0 but the make-up game against the USA may be relevant for super round placement. Venezuela outscored Australia to earn third win

Korea beat Italy, 11-0 in five-inning, to collect the fourth win in group play and is now ready to face the USA in Wednesday’s group B make up game. Rightfielder Doo Doongyeon provided more offence than Korea actually needed with three home runs and six RBIs.

Doo Doongyeon homered on the fourth pitch Italy’s starter Lucciano Munoz delivered.
With second baseman Lee Jaewon standing at third and second baseman Lee Semin at first, Doo smashed his second home run of the day against Munoz in the third to extend the lead to 4-0.

Italy had a chance to get back into the game in the bottom of the third. Reliever Yoo Yongjae walked shortstop Mattia Ruggeri. Center fielder Aldo Pavarani brought him to third with a one-out double to centre field. Ruggeri tried to score on a ball that went by catcher Lee Myeongjae but became the second out at the home plate. With Pavarani standing at third, first baseman Lee Jaejun prevented a run with a brilliant catch on a shallow pop fly by catcher Filippo Sabatini.

Korea opened the score when Doo Dongyeon homered also off reliever Alessandro Gamberini, also this time with a couple of runners on board. It was his third dinger of the game.

Korea took the game to a quick end with four more runs in the top of the fifth.

Venezuela defeated Australia, 13-0, to get a win needed to keep hopes alive for a spot in the second round.

Venezuela’s starter Jheanpol Roman allowed only one single over 4.2 innings of work and Miguel Lopez took care, on strikes, of the last out.

Venezuela was quick to get on the scoreboard in the first when shortstop Kennew Blanco took advantage of a wild pitch and opened the gap with a seven-run fourth at-bat.

Kennew Blanco and third baseman Jean Blanco both had three-hit games. Second baseman Christopher Alvarado hit a home run.
