Romo walks it off, USA beats Australia

The USA tied the game in the top of the eighth on a double by Cristopher Burke that at first was ruled a home run. The USA came back to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth on a base hit by Drew Romo. Super leaping catch by Crow-Armstrong

Australia tied it in the top of the eighth on a double they thought was a home run, but the USA came back to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth on a base hit by Drew Romo and win, 2-1, the ultimate thriller. The USA improved its record to 2-1 and matched Australia’s.

The game was mostly was a pitching duel between starters Maxwel Rajcic and Liam Mc Callum.
Rajcic got some relevant help to keep the score to zero when Pete Crow-Armstrong robbed Australia’s fellow centre fielder of an extra-base hit, possibly a home run, with an outstanding leaping catch in the bottom of the second.

Mc Callum went to the showers after the USA scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. Robert Hassell led off with a walk, reached third on a groundout and a flyout and scored on a base hit by Nolan Mc Lean.

Rajcic left after hitting Jailyn Rae in the top of the eighth. Aussie catcher Christopher Burke looked at a ball by reliever Javan Savacool and then hammered the second offering. Crow-Armstrong couldn’t get to the ball this time. The ball hit off the upper part of the fence and returned to the field. The umpires ruled it a home run at first, but the on-field review reversed the call and ruled it a double.

Australia stranded the potential go-ahead run in the top of the ninth against Alejandro Rosario.
The USA walked it off in the bottom half of the frame. James Cavill hit the first two batters he faced and Colby Halter surprised Australia’s defence with a bunt. Catcher Drew Romo worked the count to one ball and two strikes and then singled up the middle to win the games for the USA.
