U-18 Baseball World Cup Day 5: Korea, Chinese Taipei, Japan, USA to super round, Netherlands close

This is a full recap of what happened during the fifth day of the opening round of the U-18 Baseball World Cup

This is a full recap on the games played during WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup Day 5.

The rain again got his toll. The maintenance crews had to actively work the fields in the morning and the opening game was delayed by two hours.

The Netherlands defeated Australia, 4-3, using again the long ball. A three-run homer by first baseman Nathaniel Bentura made the difference. Reliever Arij Fransen took the mound to protect a one-run lead and did so getting the two final outs on ten pitches, eight for a strike.

The USA used a six-run rally to beat Spain, 8-3. Spain challenged the USA and flame-throwing pitchers Mick Abel and Alejandro Rosario, taking a lead into the seventh. It was a full wake-up call for the USA, that was able to reverse the lead and open the score in the same at-bat.

Korea became the first National Team to complete group play with a 7-2 win against China. Korea will advance to the super round, but the rest of the picture in group A is not clear.

Canada made a huge step towards the super round as they defeated Nicaragua, 9-0. Canada has yet to play the make up game against Australia. The result, as well as the score of Netherlands-China, will determine the two teams that will join Korea in the super round.

Japan defeated Panama, 5-1, in a game called because of rain in the bottom of the sixth. Home runs by Takaya Ishikawa and Kei Mizukami made a difference for the Samurai. Junya Nishi earned the win.

Chinese Taipei needed only five innings and nine hits to outscore South Africa, 15-0.
