Baseball-Softball development in the Gaza Strip: one step forward

We had told you the story of coach Mahmoud Tafesh and his bold project: introducing baseball-softball in the Gaza Strip. He received equipment from WBSC in April, he has already organized competition for men and women and created Youth teams

The project to develop baseball and softball in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, moved a step forward. Coach Mahmoud Tafesh managed to create a U-15 Boy’s Baseball League and an open tournament for Ladies.

Coach Tafesh could get started with his project thanks to a set of equipment (Mini baseball/softball starter’s kits and equipment for 2 baseball and 2 softball teams) that he received from WBSC on Sunday, 29 April.

“Sports in general and team sports like baseball and softball in particular, can be a catalyst for social change, a distraction from complicated, often violent, realities. Sport is an opportunity for building bridges between communities, and this is a role we can play as an International Federation. We praise this efforts from the Gaza community and we look forward for our sport to play a greater role for social change,” commented WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari.

Since the end of April, Mahmoud Tafesh has managed to involve in his project over 100 men, 80 women and succeeded in creating six youth teams, featuring 60 children.

Coach Tafesh now wants to get to the next level: he’s working hard to get a Palestinian Federation recognized by the National Olympic Committee.
