Europe: Baseball leagues in Bulgaria, Finland set to open this weekend

Mores leagues in Europe are opening up following the COVID-19 shutdown. Czech Republic was the first country to celebrate baseball's opening in 2020.

Two more countries in Europe will be celebrating baseball's Opening Day this weekend.

The Finnish Baseball and Softball Federation (Suomen Baseball ja Softball liitto) announced their top-flight baseball league will open today, Friday, 13 June.

The Espoo Expos will host the Helsinki Puumat in the opener. Counting the days to Opening Day, the Finnish federation organized their first-ever youth baseball camp in the suburbs of Helsinki. 

The Bulgarian Baseball League will open on Sunday, 14 June. The seven-team tournament will consist of a 42-game regular season. The top four teams after the regular season will advance to the playoffs.

The Opening Day schedule includes three double-headers. All times are CET:

10 am in Sofia: Junak-Blues
1 pm in Blagoevgrad: Lions-Buffaloes
3 pm in Sofia: Coyotes-Athletics

The seventh participating club is the Sofia Akademiks.

Opening Day of the Bulgarian Baseball League will include activities dedicated to kids and attracting new players to the game. Each team will send its representatives to the youth baseball festival.

Baseball season will also start in Switzerland this weekend.

The Czech Republic was first to kick off the European baseball season.
