LG Twins claim 'wild card' in 13 innings as KBO postseason starts

The best-of-three wild card series between the fourth and fifth place teams needed only one game. The Twins entered the series with a one-game advantage that came with finishing the regular season in fourth place.

The LG Twins beat the Kiwoom Heroes, 4-3, in 13 innings, to claim the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) League post-season best-of-three wild card series after one game. Min-ja Shin, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner in the bottom of the 12th, batted in the winning run with a single off reliever Tae-hoon Kim.

The first round of the KBO postseason started with the wild card series that brought together the fourth- and fifth-placed teams of the regular season. The Twins entered the series with a one-game advantage for having finished in fourth-place and needed to win just one game to close out the series.

The Twins will now advance to a semi-playoff against the Doosan Bears, the third-placed team of the regular season and defending KBO champions. Both teams call the Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul their home field.

The winner of this best-of-three "semi-playoff' series -- which opens on Wednesday, 4 November -- will face second-place KT Witz in the best-of-five playoff series, with the winner taking on the NC Dinos for the KBO championship in the best-of-seven Korean Series. The Dinos had the best regular-season record, with 83 wins, 55 losses and 6 draws.

The 10-team KBO season was delayed by the COVID-19 outbreak and opened on 5 May behind closed doors.
