Puerto Rico women's baseball league opens 2021 season

The league is back in operation after a 19-month halt. Six teams are competing in a 12-game regular season.

The XII Puerto Rican Women's Baseball League opened this past Saturday, 7 August. The season is dedicated to César Hernández, one of the pioneers in creating the league.

Six teams are participating in the 2021 season, including expansion club Valerosas de Ciales.

The other participants are defending champions Artesanas de Las Piedras, runners-up Poetas de Juana Diaz, Lobas de Arecibo, Maceteras de Vega Alta and Cafeteras de Yauco.

The Puerto Rico Women's Baseball League had been suspending since 2019.

"The last game was played in December 2019," said José Quiles Rosas, the president of the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation. "We moved up this 2021 season and we are thrilled by the expansion franchise Valerosas de Ciales. I'm looking forward to seeing these girls play hard and I foresee an emotional season."

After a 12-game round-robin, the top four finishers will advance to the semifinals.

Both the semifinal and the final series will be best-of-five series.

Artesanas beat Las Lobas, 2-1, behind strong pitching by Angelis Rivera, on opening day. Las Lobas came back to win the second game, 12-6.

Daymaralis Hernandez threw a no-hitter leading Poetas to a 10-0 win over Cafeteras.

Puerto Rico is currently ranked ninth in the WBSC Women's Baseball World Rankings.
