SEA Games: softball playoffs set to begin on Friday

Malaysia secured their first-ever SEA Games medal in the women’s softball event. The baseball competition had the day off on Thursday.

Malaysia made history after beating Singapore, 5-4, in eight innings, in the last competition day of the Women’s Softball competition at the SEA Games on Thursday. With this win, the Malaysian team clinched second place in the round robin phase and therefore secured the first-ever medal for the country.

Singapore was leading 4-3 in the seventh inning but Jayaindraan Pavithraa tied the game with a solo homer, sending the match to an extra innings. The winning run for Malaysia was scored during the tie-break in the eighth inning by Halfa Chin who was pinch-running for Nur Fateha.

The SEA Games Women’s Softball competition round robin concluded with this game. The Philippines (4-0) advanced undefeated and will face Malaysia on Friday with the first spot in the final on the line. The loser will play against the winner between Singapore (third place) and Indonesia (fourth place), for the other berth in the final. The loser of the second play-off for the final, will win the bronze medal.

The Men’s Softball competition also finished the round robin on Thursday with a 4-inning victory by Singapore over Thailand, by a score of 13-0.

Singapore finished in second place in the opening round and will play against the Philippines on Friday for a spot in the final. Indonesia and Thailand will play a single-elimination game in the page system playoff.
