Softball Canada cancels junior National Team tryouts

The decision has been driven by the inter-provincial travel required, troublesome COVID-19 spikes in some parts of the country and challenges with various jurisdictional approaches to COVID-19, among other issues.

Softball Canada has announced that the upcoming Junior Women’s National Team tryouts have been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The tryouts for a spot on Canada's top youth softball team were scheduled for mid-August in the cities of Brampton, Saskatoon and Surrey.

“While we were originally hopeful about staging these combines, after continually monitoring the COVID-19 situation across the country and consulting with medical professionals and local officials, we are not comfortable proceeding,” a Softball Canada statement stated.

The tryouts had been programmed to identify and select the country's best softball players for the U-17 national team that would go on to compete in the Pan American Youth Softball Championship 2021 -- a qualifier for the 2022 WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup. Canada will also be scouting for the top 19-year-old players in the country for next year's U-18 Women's Softball World Cup, which was postponed from 2020 and will allow players would have been eligible this year.

Identification camps for the U-17 national team are tentatively being planned for the spring of 2021.

Canada is currently ranked third in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Rankings.
