St. Lucie County invites President Joe Biden to cheer on USA at WBSC Americas Olympic qualifier in Florida

World No. 2 USA is the highest-ranked nation not already qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic baseball event. Top-ranked Japan, No. 3 Korea, No. 5 Mexico and No. 18 Israel await the winner in Florida.

US President Joe Biden could be amongst the guests of honours of the WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier, which will award one highly coveted ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky invited President Biden to join him at the ballpark to cheer on the US National Baseball Team. Biden, an ex-ballplayer himself, is a known supporter of the sport of baseball, the nation's pastime.

The US will face some very strong competition in Florida, with the Americas boasting many of the world's top baseball-playing nations. The US will be the top-ranked team in the qualifier:

Group A: World No. 2 USA, No. 10 Dominican Republic, No. 11 Puerto Rico and No. 15 Nicaragua.
Group B: No. 7 Cuba, No. 8 Venezuela, No. 13 Canada and No. 14 Colombia.

WBSC announced the official schedule on Thursday, 29 April. Group play is scheduled from 31 May to 2 June. After a rain day, the Super Round between the top four teams will begin on 4 June.

The US will open the qualifier against Nicaragua on Monday, 31 May, at 7:00 pm local time in St. Lucie.

WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier Schedule

The winner of the qualifier in Florid will become the fifth nation in the six-team Tokyo 2020 baseball tournament. The runner-up and third-place finisher will have another chance during the WBSC Baseball Final Qualifier, scheduled from 16 to 20 June in Taichung and Douliou City, Taiwan. It will be the end of the Olympic dream for those teams that finish fourth to eighth in Florida.
