V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton under way

Edmonton (Canada). The V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton, Canada is under way. The tournament was kicked off with three games on Friday. The United States, Australia and host Canada celebrated a successful start into the event, picking up wins at Telus Field.

USA 10 – Netherlands 0 

Team USA needed just five innings to down the Netherlands 10-0 in the opening match of the V Women’s Baseball World Cup. Kristin Caldwell and Kayla Bufardeci combined for a one-hit shutout. Tamara Holmes, Malaika Underwood and Caitlin Everett picked up two RBI apiece in a balanced offense. Letticia Lokken-Horstman had the lone hit for the Netherlands in the fifth. Donna Hartman took the loss on the mound.

Cuba 4 – Australia 12

Australia overcame two deficits to rally in a 12-4 victory over Cuba in the second game of the day at Telus Field. Six runs in the fifth inning gave the team from Down Under the lead. Christina Kreppold led the offense by going 4-for-5 with a homerun shy of the cycle and four RBI. Shae Lillywhite scored thrice. Kim McMillan received the win with a brilliant relief outing. Yurismaris Baez drove in two for Cuba. Yaima Ramos was charged with the loss.

Canada 12 – Chinese Taipei 2

Host Canada had a perfect start into the V Women’s Baseball World Cup, dispatching Chinese Taipei 12-2 on Friday evening. The Maple Leafs countered an early lead of the Asians with five runs in the first two frames and put the game in the books with seven combined runs in the fourth and fifth. Meagan Cornelssen drove in three, Nicole Luchanski scored three times. Katherine Psota earned the win for Canada. Hsiao Chien Wang got the loss.

Notes

An opening ceremony preluded the evening game between Canada and Chinese Taipei….Nicole Luchanski held the athletes oath, Kim Bueckert the umpires oath…..Justine Siegal officially opened the tournament on behalf of IBAF….Laurie Hawn, member of the parliament, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
