Venezuela's 'Juegos Deportivos': Distrito Capital wins U-18 baseball tournament; women's U-19 final awaits

The 13-team tournament served as a vehicle to select the best players for the U-18 National Team. The U-19 women's tournament opened on 8 February -- the finals are scheduled for Saturday, 12 February.

Distrito Capital defeated Mérida, 4-1, in the final of Venezuela's Juegos Deportivos (National Sport Games) U-18 baseball tournament, while Carabobo beat Yaracuy, 11-1, to earn the bronze medal.

The U-18 national tourney provided the Venezuela National Baseball Federation (FEVEBEISBOL) the opportunity to scout the country's best young players that will eventually form their next U-18 National Team.

The baseball tournament featured 13 participating teams: Aragua, Miranda, Mérida, Barinas, Lara, Nueva Esparta, Carabobo, Falcon, Portuguesa, Yaracui, Distrito Capital, Sucre and Tachira.

The tournament opened on 1 February. The 13 participants were split into four groups. The top two finishers advanced to the playoffs.

RESULTS and STANDINGS

The U-19 women's baseball tournament, which is currently underway, features six participants: Anzoategui, Aragua, Carabobo, Distrito Capital, Lara and Miranda.

The tournament opened on Tuesday, 8 February. After the round-robin phase, the top two finishers will compete for the title, the third- and fourth-place finishers will play for bronze. The finals are scheduled for Saturday, 12 February.

RESULTS, STANDINGS and PLAY BY PLAY

The Juegos Deportivos are a multi-sport event scheduled every other year since 1999 by the National Institute of Sports. Each of the federal entities of Venezuela participates in the Games. The overall goal is to promote different disciplines and help the best talent develop into National Team players.

Venezuela is the U-23 Baseball World Champion and is No. 6 in the WBSC Baseball World Rankings and No. 5 in Women's Baseball World Rankings.
