WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier: Canada secures first place in Group A; Brazil, Mexico undefeated in Group B

For the Group A Canada sealed today the first place with a key win over Puerto Rico, while Cuba secured its place in the Super Round beating Guatemala. In Group B, Brazil and Mexico are still undefeated and tomorrow will play each other for the first place.

Cuba 15-0 Guatemala

Cuba defeated Guatemala, 15-0, and made a huge step to finish in the top three at Group A and advance to the Super Round of the WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier. Right-handed pitcher Anisley Lopez threw 5 scoreless innings allowing only 1 hit, with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks, to lead the Cuban team.

Puerto Rico 0-3 Canada

In front of a fully packed Softball City stadium, Canada took a pivotal win today over Puerto Rico, 3-0, to seal the first place in Group A. Sara Groenewegen, Jenna Caira and Danielle Lawrie combined for a 4-hit shutout. With this result, Canada secured the first place in Group A and will advance to the Super Round with a perfect 2-0 record. Puerto Rico will close tomorrow the Opening Round against Cuba.

Venezuela 0-7 Mexico

Suzannah Brookshire collected 4 RBI with a triple and a home run to lift Mexico over Venezuela, 7-0, in five innings. Danielle O’Toole claimed her first win of the tournament, with 8 strikeouts in five innings, allowing only 2 hits.

Brazil 4-3 Dominican Republic

Brazil defeated Dominican Republic, 4-3, remains unbeaten on top of Group B and secured the qualification to the Super Round, starting on Friday. For the second consecutive night, Mariana Ribeiro produced the game-winning run, late in the match.
