PANAMA CITY, Panama – No. 11 Puerto Rico defeated rival No. 16 Dominican Republic, 17-1, in six innings to earn the bronze medal in the Pan American U-23 Baseball Championship.

Yariel Gonzalez (St. Louis Cardinals Class A – MLB) had 7 RBI and blasted two home runs, including a grand slam in the sixth inning that pushed Puerto Rico past the 15-run mercy rule, as Oakland A’s pitching prospect Joe Camacho earned the win.

“I’m very happy for the guys and the level that we demonstrated,” said Puerto Rico manager Yadier Molina. “A medal always makes you happy.”

Both Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico finished the continental championship with an overall record of 6-3, and will represent the Americas, along with Mexico and Venezuela, in the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2018.
