Yasuda homers, Taneichi pitches a gem, Japan beats Chinese Taipei

The third baseman of the third place Samurai team at the U-18 World Cup 2017 broke the tie in an oldfashioned pitching duel with a two run shot in the third. Atsuki Taneichi pitched seven stellar innings to earn the win

A home run by Hisanori Yasuda set the tone for the second win of the defending champions Japan in the U-23 Baseball World Cup. Samurai beat Chinese Taipei 3-1.
Yasuda, who played third base for the Japanese third place team in the U-18 Baseball World Cup 2017, homered off Chinese Taipei starter Wei Shuo Cheng in the top of third with Kairi Shimada on second.

Atsuki Taneichi, who late this season earned a job as a starter for the Chiba Lotte Marines in the Japanese Major Leagues (NPB), didn’t need more run support. He went seven innings and allowed only four hits, while striking out nine. Chinese Taipei scored the only run thanks to a solo homer by shortstop Li Cheng En off lefty reliever Atsuya Horie with one out in the bottom of the ninth.

Wei Shuo Cheng went also seven innings in what turned out to be an oldfashioned pitching duel. He allowed Japan’s third run in the top of the seventh.  Shortstop Taiga Matsuo tripled and, with 2 outs, lead-off hitter and DH Yoshua Myazawa doubled to make it 3-1.

Japan had stranded a bases loaded situation in the top of the second and could have opened the score in the top of the ninth on a deep fly ball to the gap in left center by Miyazawa. A great running catch by center fielder Hong Wei Han got the third out of the frame for Chinese Taipei.
