WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier: Mexico still perfect; Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba earn first win

After two days of competition at the WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier, Puerto Rico and Canada lead Group A, while three teams are still undefeated in Group B: Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela.

Brazil 5-0 Peru

In a South American matchup, Brazil claimed the win against Peru, 5-0, in the second day of the WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier. Brazilian pitchers Silva and Shiroma were brilliant, combining for the shutout. The left-handed starter pitched 4.2 innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk, with 5 strikeouts and took the win. In relief Shiroma fanned 2 in 2.1 episodes, allowing only 1 hit.

Dominican Republic 19 Mexico

Mexico improved to 2-0 at Group B with a 9-1, fine-inning victory over Dominican Republic in the second day of the Olympic Qualifier. The Mexicans scored six runs in the third inning to take a decisive lead in the game. Escobedo earned her first win of the tournament, working 3 innings with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. The right-hander has struck out 11 of the 14 batters she faced in the tournament.

Puerto Rico 13-0 Guatemala

Taran Alvelo, Xeana Dung and Aleshia Ocasio combined to pitch a five-inning perfect game for Puerto Rico, leading the team to a 13-0 win over Guatemala in the second day of competition. Puerto Rican staff fanned 11 of the 15 batters they faced. Offensively, Puerto Rico hit five home runs, three of them in a 7-run fifth inning.

Bahamas 0- 13 Cuba

A 6-hit, 9-run first inning sealed the win for Cuba in the last game of the day at Softball City. The Cuban team defeated Bahamas, 13-0, in four innings and evened its record 1-1. After a tough loss yesterday to start the tournament, Cuba rebounded today with a comfortable win.
