The 31-year old switch-hitting utility infielder has an intriguing Olympic background: he earned a silver medal in short track speed skating at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

The United States Olympic Team has selected baseball player Eddy Alvarez as one of its two flag bearers. The other one is Sue Bird of the women's basketball National Team.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be named as one of the flag bearers by my fellow Team USA athletes for the Opening Ceremony,” said Alvarez

Alvarez earned a silver medal in short track speed skating at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, thus becoming the second player in the history of the game to appear on an MLB roster after winning an Olympic medal in another sport.

Alvarez gave up skating after the Sochi Games to focus on his baseball career.

The 31-year old Alvarez is the son of a Cuban immigrant. He was on the Miami Marlins' Triple-A team when he made the final US roster for the WBSC Americas Qualifier. He appeared in four games, starting three at second base. He went 3 for 11, batting average .273, with a triple and two doubles.
