Softball Australia Olympic roster revealed, Stacey Porter named captain

World No. 8 Australia have revealed their Olympic softball roster. The Aussies won the WBSC Softball Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifier in September 2019 to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

Softball Australia, together with the Australian Olympic Committee, have announced their 15-athlete roster for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games softball competition. Dual Olympic medallist Stacey Porter will captain the team, with the 39-year-old the only team member to have competed at an Olympics.

Softball Australia and Japan will have the honour of opening the Tokyo 2020 Games, when they meet on the morning of 21 July in Fukushima .

Training and competing in Japan since June, Australia were the first overseas team to arrive in the country ahead of the Games, getting invaluable competition against Japanese professional teams and the Japanese national squad.

“After a tough few weeks in Japan, I’m excited about the potential of our final team selected for Tokyo,” said head coach Laing Harrow. “Arriving in Ota City early for our final selection camp has given us the best possible chance to prepare for the sport’s return to the Olympics and I’m really pleased with how the players have been performing both on and off the diamond, and under difficult conditions.”

Tokyo 2020 – Olympic Softball Schedule

The Olympic softball competition will run from 21-27 July. Australia will compete against Canada, Italy, Japan, Mexico and USA in a round robin, with the top two in the standings advancing to the Gold Medal Game, while third and fourth-finishers will play for the Bronze Medal.

Australia won the September 2019 WBSC Softball Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifier in China.
