Aleshia Ocasio lifts Puerto Rico to first win at The World Games

Ocasio led off the game with a homer to right field to grab the early lead, and then in the bottom of the seventh she tripled and scored an insurance run.

Lifted by Puerto Rican Aleshia Ocasio's stellar performance, the Caribbean squad defeated Mexico, 3-1, in Game 1 of The World Games 2022 softball competition, which opened today at Hoover Met Stadium. The two-way player pitched seven innings of one run ball, giving up five hits and one run, while striking out nine. 

On the offensive side, Ocasio led off the game with a homer to right field to grab an early lead, and then in the bottom of the seventh she tripled and scored the insurance run. 

Puerto Rico’s second run was scored after an RBI single by Jena Cozza in the top of the first.

For Mexico, Sierra Hyland was charged with the loss, pitching six innings while giving up five hits, five walks and three runs.

Puerto Rico will face Australia tomorrow, 10 July, at 4 p.m. local time, while Mexico will take on Japan at 10 a.m.
