Top-10 WBSC Softball World Cup Plays of the Year: No. 8 Uxua Modrego (Spain)

No. 8 in the 2023 Softball World Cup countdown is Modrego's run-saving diving catch at centre field against the Netherlands.

Welcome back to the WBSC Top-10 Softball Plays of the Year, a review of the best 10 plays in the WBSC Softball World Cups in 2023. Spain's Uxua Modrego made the list by making a superb diving catch in shallow centre field against the Netherlands, in a Group B game of the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup group stage.

Netherlands and Spain squared off on 20 July at Camp Municipal de Beisbol i Sofbol in Valencia, Spain, in a key game for both teams. The European Champions carried two losses from their first two games against Cuba and China, while the hosts had a 1-1 record after winning over South Africa and losing to Cuba.

In the bottom of the fifth, Netherlands left fielder Annemiek Jansen found runners on first and second, with two outs. With the game 1-0 for the orange squad, and full count, Jansen connected a fly to shallow centre field that surely looked like a single into no-man's land. But Modrego dashed and made a spectacular diving catch, robbing Jansen of an RBI single.

In the end, the Netherlands claimed the win, 3-2
