2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup “All-Star” named MLB Player of the Week, follows 2001 BWC’s Morneau

Jose Abreu – the 2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup “All-Star”  with the Cuban National Team – was named Major League Baseball’s co-American League (AL) Player of the Week.

Last week, a member of Canada’s National Team at the 2001 IBAF Baseball World Cup, was honoured with MLB’s National League (NL) Player of the week.

According to reports by MLB, Abreu batted .310 (9-for-29) with five home runs, eight runs scored and slugging percentage of .862 while leading the AL with 14 RBIs.

Abreu, 27, leads the top league in the USA with 10 homers and 31 RBIs and has set MLB rookie (first-year) records for the most homers and RBIs through April.

At the 2011 Baseball World Cup, Abreu batted .475 (19 for 40) with three home runs, three doubles and compiled eight RBI, and helped Cuba finish with the silver medal, for which he was named the All-Star first baseman of the event in Panama

Abreu also was a member of Cuba’s National Team that earned a silver medal at the 2009 Baseball World Cup in Italy.
