Baseball5 World Champions Briandy Molina, Orlando Amador win provincial tournament in Havana

The tournament served as a prelude to the Havana provincial team selection for the National Championship, to be played in Holguin Province in October.

Baseball5 World Champions Briandy Molina and Orlando Amador teamed up again in Havana to lead Playa Municipality in the provincial tournament, a six-team event played in the Cuban capital city. Molina and Amador played key roles in Cuba’s WBSC Baseball5 World Cup winning run in 2022, with the former winning MVP honours.

A total of six teams competed in the tournament. Tournament’s winners Playa faced the municipalities of 10 de Octobre (runners-up), La Lisa, Habana del Este, Cerro and the Havana Youth selection team as a guest squad. It was the first provincial tournament in the history of the street discipline.

The event served as a test to build the Havana provincial team that will participate in the National Championship, set to take place in October in the south eastern province of Holguin.

Earlier this month, Artemisa, La Habana and Mayabeque Provinces played a series of friendlies to tune up for the Nationals. La Habana swept the series, while rivals Artemisa finished second.

In the latest WBSC Baseball5 World Rankings release, Cuba, who dropped five places due to the expiration of points from 2019, is now ranked sixth.
