David Weiss’ inside-the-park homer highlights Hong Kong victory over India

Hong Kong's aggressive hitting and base-running gave them the advantage over India to earn their first win in the U-12 Softball World Cup. Gabriel Wan, Ching Chan and David Weiss were the top performers for Hong Kong.

A David Weiss inside-the-park home run helped Hong Kong record its first victory in the II WBSC U-12 Softball World Cup by beating India 10-3 on Thursday at Jin-Long Stadium.

Gabriel Wan and Ching Chan each scored three runs in the game, the former also contributing two hits and an RBI single and the latter adding a hit; while Chavin, Rohith Karnan and Kanishka earned India’s three runs in the game.

After Matt Chui held India scoreless in the top of the first inning, Hong Kong opened the scoring with Wan, Ching Chan and Chun Ting Chan who added two runs after the latter tripled to right field on an error by Indian right fielder Sachin Chavan. Weiss’ inside-the-park homer to centre field topped Hong Kong’s great start to lead 4-0.

Both sides scored 1-2 in three successive innings with Chavin scoring India’s first run in the second inning, while Wan and Ching Chan each scoring their second run in the game for the score of 6-1. Rohith Karnan started off with a walk and eventually completed a run for India, while Weiss and Colin Cheung reached home on an illegal pitch and a ground out by Yan Yu Ng that extended the Hong Kong lead to 8-2.

With two outs at top of the fourth, India scored again as Kanishka progressed through a series of walks and a fielder’s choice to trail at 8-3, but Hong Kong responded with two more runs by Wan and Ching Chan to maintain the seven-run lead, until the fifth inning closed on a 10-3 scoreline in favour of the East Asian squad.
