Eight-run first inning leads Australia to win over Botswana

Australia’s leadoff hitter Pippa Adkins went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

An eight-run first inning helped Australia to secure their second straight win of the tournament, a 10-0 victory over Botswana in four innings. Australia’s leadoff hitter Pippa Adkins went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Kandra Lamb started for Australia and took care of the first three innings, recording seven strikeouts while giving up one hit, a double into the left center field gap by first baseman Tshegofatso Gaetepele. Grace Wrixon pitched the fourth inning, with one strikeout.

Lesego Ditau took the loss for the Africans. She pitched the first inning and was responsible for eight runs, four of them earned.

Australia improved their record to 2-1 and later today will take on USA, in their second game of the day. For Botswana it was their third successive loss.

Adkins told the WBSC it was a "great team effort" that helped Australia get on top early.

"The tournament is going great so far but I feel the best is yet to come," Adkins said. "It was good to be back out there and get some good hits, I feel really good about us going forward.

Aussie support: We have a really good support system. Everyone is out there and we can always hear them super loud. We're very lucky.

Test v US: "Just keep doing what we're doing, keep hitting the ball well. We've got a good defence. We're ready."
