Eighth-inning offensive outburst gives Mexico first-ever WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup win

A three-run homer by Diana Ibarra capped an eight-run eighth inning for Mexico to secure a 16-8 win over Australia. It’s the country’s first win in the history of the competition.

Mexico made history Wednesday at Baseball Central in Thunder Bay, Canada, earning the program’s first-ever win in a WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup. Mexico defeated Australia, 16-8 in extra innings, remaining in contention for a spot in next year’s Finals. Mexico bounced back from yesterday’s tough loss against Canada in their debut by together a solid offensive performance to clinch a much-needed win.

BOX SCORE

The game was a roller coaster with four changes in the lead. Australia jumped ahead in the first inning, but Mexico came from behind in the top of the third with a five-run inning. Australia tied the game, but Mexico took the lead again in the fourth.

The game looked secured for Mexico in the bottom of the seventh, with an 8-5 lead. However, a defensive error opened the door for Australia, tying the game with a clutch two-out, two-RBI single off the bat of Tiara Geldenhuist, sending the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, with two runners on for the tie break rule, Daniela Leal bunted to the pitcher Morgan Doty, who tried to retire the leading runner on third, but the throw went into the left field, allowing the two Mexican runners score in the play. After that, Mexico scored six more runs, including a three-run bomb by Diana Ibarra.

With the win, Mexico’s record is now 1-1 and tomorrow will play a decisive match against Hong Kong, China. For Australia, it’s their second loss in as many games.
