Guaynabo crowned champions at the Puerto Rican Men’s National championship

The Guaynabo Mets swept the final series 3-0 against the defending champions, Aguada Mucaros, to earn the title of 2015-2016 Champions of the Puerto Rican top men’s league.

Guaynabo finished the season with a record of 19-2, to gain their eleventh Championship in the 38-year history of the Puerto Rican Men’s National Championship.

The action at the Carlos Cajigas Park in Aguada started immediately when the first two batters in the line-up for the Mets – Juan Carlos Martinez and Alexis Barbosa – both hit home runs off pitcher, Carlos Rubio. By the time the inning ended, the Metropolitan team added another four runs to take the advantage to 6-0.

In the top of the 2nd inning, the lead was extended to 8 – off another home run and a defensive error.

The Mucaros were able to score their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning after a fielder’s choice, allowing Kenny Flores to score. The scoring continued when three more crossed home plate to bring the score to 12-4.

The Mucaros’ were able to hit three more home runs – Cesar Valentin (solo), Josean Corchado (2-run), Michael Ramos (solo) – to bring the score to 12-8 heading into the seventh inning.

However, Guaynabo’s bats got hot again, adding three runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 15-8.

In the bottom of the 7th, Guaynabo brought in Israel Santiago, who shut down Aguada to close out the game to seal the victory and the sweep.

The right-handed David Rivera (Guaynabo) took the victory with 12 hits, 7 RBI, three walks and 5 strikeouts in five innings. Carlos Rubio (Aguanda) took the loss.
