Hideki Kuriyama leaves Samurai Japan

The contract of the 2023 World Baseball Classic-winning manager expired on 31 May.

Hideki Kuriyama, who managed World No. 1 Japan to the 2023 World Baseball Classic title, met the Japanese press after his contract with Samurai Japan expired on 31 May.

"I am not sure if it was a long or a short time since I took the job in December 2021, but the outcome was that I was able to win [the World Baseball Classic]. I'm grateful for the opportunity."

Samurai Japan's 2023 roster was reportedly the strongest of all time. "We tried to build the best team possible. What makes me proud is that all these stars came together as a team for Japanese baseball."

Kuriyama emphasised the legacy of the World Baseball Classic title. "The players who competed in the 2023 tournament grew up watching Japan win in 2006 and 2009. What they accomplished will inspire the next generation. One day, some players now in high school or junior high school will say the 2023 team inspired them."
