Italian Olympic softball ace Greta Cecchetti to play in Japan’s JD League

Cecchetti will play for the SGH Galaxy Stars, in the JD League West Division.

Italian National Team ace Greta Cecchetti, who was part of the Italian Olympic Softball Team at Tokyo 2020, will be pitching this season in the JD League, the new and rebranded Japanese softball league.

Cecchetti will play for SGH Galaxy Stars, in the JD League West Division. The Italian hurler made the announcement through her Twitter account. Back in December, Cecchetti was added to the Athletes Unlimited roster for the 2022 season.

The right-hander tossed 18.1 innings during the Olympic Games, with eight strikeouts and six walks. She ended Tokyo 2020 with a 3.44 ERA.

Aiming to be the "strongest league in the world", the rebranded Japan Diamond League will open on 28 March in Chiba. The JD.League will replace the traditional Japan Softball League, including the rebranding of the league and a new competition format.

A total 16 teams will be split into two divisions: East and West. Each team will play 29 regular season games, including 21 games against the divisional rivals (7 as home team, 7 as visiting team, and 7 in a neutral venue), and 8 inter-divisional games.

The playoffs will be played from 5-6 November, with the championship 'Diamond Series' slated for 12-13 November.
