Mexico wins U-15 “Serie de las Americas” international baseball tourney

The host team won the title after a 4-0 shutout against Puerto Rico in the final game.

The U-15 Mexican National Baseball Team won the “Serie de las Americas” title on Thursday, with a 4-0 victory over Puerto Rico in the final of the tournament. The WBSC-sanctioned event was played at Angel Camarena Romo stadium in Tijuana, Mexico, with six participating national teams.

Jeter Martínez, Giovani Vargas and Enoch Martinez combined for a 2-hit shutout,to lead Mexico in the final. Shortstop Karim Garcia, second baseman Hector Verdugo and designated hitter Juan Alva each hit safely twice in three at-bats.

Six teams played in the event: world No. 5 Mexico, No. 6 Dominican Republic, No. 10 Venezuela, No. 12 Puerto Rico, No. 14 Nicaragua and No. 21 Brazil.

In the bronze medal game, Venezuela topped Nicaragua, 6-4, to reach the podium. Nicaragua (fourth), Dominican Republic (fifth) and Brazil (sixth) completed the standings.

Emilio Villarreal (MEX) was named the MVP of the tournament; he was also the best hitter with a .571 batting average and led the tournament with 9 RBI.
