Nairobi hosts first Baseball5 Coaching Clinic

Thirteen coaches from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania participated in the first of four courses organized by the WBSC and Olympic Solidarity to support the growth of Baseball5 in Africa building towards the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics.

Thirteen coaches from East Africa - eight from Kenya, three from Uganda and two from Tanzania - participated in the first of four Baseball5 Coaching Clinics the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), WBSC Africa and Olympic Solidarity launched to support the growth of the five-on-five version of baseball/softball in the continent ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal.

The clinic, coordinated by instructor Americo Juma (South Africa) with the collaboration of Susan Wanjiku (Kenya), ran from Friday, 1 December to Sunday, 3 December, at Nazarene University in Nairobi, Kenya.

It consisted of a combination of class sessions and work in the field. At the end of the clinic, all participants were tested, and everybody scored above average in the written exam. Juma had a special mention for Maclina Mutabuzi (Tanzania), Vincent Cheruiyot (Kenya) and Ibrahim Kaboggoza (Uganda).

"All the participants showed a good attitude and a lot of passion for the game," commented Juma, who praised how the Kenya Softball Association organized the event.

Abuja, Nigeria, will host a second clinic for coaches from western Africa from 12 to 14 December.

The other two clinics are scheduled for early 2024 and will be directed to coaches from northern and southern Africa.
