The world softball community is mourning the loss of Roberto Espinoza, Nicaragua Softball Federation President who passed away on 26 January, at age 70. Espinoza led the Nicaraguan Softball Federation (FENISOFT) for 34 years, and served as 3rd Vice President of the Nicaragua National Olympic Committee.
"On behalf of everyone at WBSC, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Espinoza family and the Federación Nicaraguense de Softbol for their loss," said World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) President Riccardo Fraccari. "Roberto Espinoza has been a great member of WBSC who has helped Nicaraguan sport massively by contributing significantly to the growth of softball in the region."
“I’m very saddened on the passing of Roberto Espinoza, a tremendous leader and a friend of mine for almost 15 years,” added Tommy Velazquez, WBSC Softball Chairman. “What a great loss to the softball world. He will be missed by so many. My deepest sympathies to Roberto’s wife Marbel Gamboa and his family for this great loss.”
Espinoza was first elected FENISOFT President in 1985, and played a pivotal role during the Central American Games Managua 2017, hosting the softball events where the Nicaragua’s women’s squad earned the silver medal.
