Durham, N.C. – For the 2014 season, the Can-Am League has announced the adoption of extra-innings tiebreaker rules to be used in all regular-season games, based upon existing International Baseball Federation rules.

Beginning in the 11th inning, the player in the batting order immediately preceding that inning’s leadoff hitter will be placed on second base. The inning will otherwise proceed as usual, with each team getting a turn at bat.

Should the player starting the inning on second base eventually score, it will count in statistics as a run for the player and an RBI for the batter who drove him in (if applicable), but it will not count towards the pitcher’s earned-run average.

Can-Am League commissioner Miles Wolff commented, “We are excited to try this innovation in the Can-Am League, and we believe our fans will be intrigued by this rule. It has proven successful and popular in international competition and the World Baseball Classic. With a 22-man roster in the league, it will help our managers protect their pitching staffs.”

Similar rules are also in effect for most international competitions, including during the World Baseball Classic and the IBAF World Championships.
