Spain use 13-run first inning to cruise past South Africa

Starter Beatriz Alonso tossed two perfect innings for Spain, striking out the six batters she faced.

An inside the park three run homer by Meritxell Blesa highlighted Spain’s 13-run first inning, in their 14-0 win over South Africa on Day 1 of the Women’s Softball World Cup Group B. The hosts connected seven of the nine hits of the game in this first frame.

Starter Beatriz Alonso tossed two perfect innings for Spain, striking out the six batters she faced. In relief, Ariadna Cerda tossed two innings giving up one hit. She earned the win. 

Offensively, Blesa collected three RBIs, Carla Segura went 2-for-2 with two runs, while Anna Sobrino and Estibaliz Alvarez had two each in the game.

The only South African hit came off the bat of Shane Luyt in the top of the third inning.
