Baseball one of the biggest sports at Taipei 2017 Universiade, set to open

TAIPEI CITY — The 29th Summer Universiade features an 8 team baseball tournament. Participants are: Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Czech Republic and France in Group A; Japan, United States, Mexico and Russia in Group B

TAIPEI — Baseball — Taiwan’s national sport —  will be one of the most popular sports on the programme of the Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade, with an 8 team tournament. The teams are divided into 2 Groups: the hosts Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Czech Republic and France in Group A; Japan, United States, Mexico and Russia in Group B. After the qualifying round, the top 2 teams of each group will face each other in a super round, to determine the semi finals. Gold and bronze medal games are scheduled on Tuesday 29 August.

The tournament opens Sunday, 20 August, at 11 am local time (5 am CET, 11 pm East Coast USA) with matches between France and Chinese Taipei; Russia-Japan. The games will be played in Taipei Tianmu Stadium and in New Taipei City Xinshuan Stadium.

FULL SCHEDULE

The 29th edition of the Summer Universiade will feature 7,000 student athletes across 22 sports. The event is organized by FISU (International University Sports Federation), a governing created in 1949. The FISU Technical Delegate to the baseball tournament is Giuseppe Guilizzoni of Italy, in the late 1970s the manager for the Italian National Team and a WBSC Technical Commissioner. In the Technical Committee Aso Koji of Japan represents WBSC and Yeh Chih Shien represents the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association.

The first Universiade was organized in Turin (Italy) in 1959 and also the 30th edition will be organized in Italy: in Naples, July 2019.
