Two great Camacho plays give Mexico the win against Australia in eight-inning thriller
Left fielder Angel Camacho sent the game to extra innings with a spectacular diving catch, then scored the winning run as the lead tie-break runner.
World No. 4 Mexico defeated World No. 10 Australia at the end of a thrilling game 3-2 in Group B of the IV WBSC Baseball World Cup in Tianmu Baseball Stadium on Friday.
With the score tied at two, left fielder Angel Camacho kept Mexico in the game with a diving catch on a deep fly to left field by Aussie center fielder Solomon Maguire. He then scored the winning run on a base hit by shortstop Javier Sanchez.
Mexico got on the scoreboard first. Australia's starter Coen Wynn allowed only one hit over three innings. Reliever Blake Townsend started the fourth with a hit batter and a walk and left for Ky Jackson.
Catcher Brandon Valenzuela took the third Australian pitcher to deep center field for a two-RBI double.
Mexico's starter Fernando Sanchez looked almost unhittable through four innings. In the bottom of the fifth right fielder Christopher Burke homered to put Australia on the board.
Sanchez left after allowing a base hit to DH Mitchell Edwards. Second baseman Trevis Bazzana got to reliever Jordan Suarez with an RBI-double that tied the game.
Australia came close to a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh. With Bailey Cooke at second, center fielder Solomon Maguire took reliever Manuel Castro to deep left field. Angel Camacho gave Mexico another chance as he got Maguire with a spectacular diving catch.
Shortstop Javier Sanchez singled off Jacob Green in the top of the eighth to score lead tie-break runner Camacho from second. Mexico wasted the second tie-break runner trying to reach third, but reliever Nestor Anguamea navigated through the bottom of the eighth without allowing Australia's tie-break runners to advance.
