University of Messina hosts second Blind Baseball Tournament of the Strait

University of Messina, Etna Blind Paternò and San Giorgio Reggio Calabria competed in a two-day event. Paternò won the trophy. The ultimate goal is to see a team from the Strait join the Italian Blind Baseball League.

The University of Messina organized the second blind baseball Tournament of the Strait, marking another step towards joining the Italian Blind Baseball League (LIBCI) with a Sicilian team.

The University team competed against Etna Blind from Paternò (near Catania) and San Giorgio Reggio Calabria. Two LIBC teams contributed with their players and coaches. Umbria Redskins supported Paternò, while Leonessa Brescia partnered with Reggio Calabria.

Each team played four five-inning games in the qualification round. Paternò dominated the first round. Reggio Calabria defeated Messina University, 1-0, in the last game to advance to the final.

Etna Blind Paternò shut out San Giorgio Reggio Calabria, 7-0. Giangiacomo Bonomo hit three home runs and batted in five of the seven runs. He earned best hitter honours.

Danilo Musarella of Reggio Calabria was named the best defensive player.

The first edition of the Blind Baseball Tournament of the Strait was played in October 2022.
